I’ve been getting 2 phone calls a day on my mobile phone since last Thursday. My handset will ring once and then stop. The calls are from different numbers each time, but the all start with 07099 8. The first call is about 13:20 and the next just before 19:00. I can only think that this is a scam, where they expect me to return the call which is probably a premium rate line.
I don’t ever call back numbers which I don’t recognise if there’s no voicemail. Unfortunately I was drunk on Saturday night, and my call register tells me I returned one call for 1:25 minutes. I can’t remember what happened. So when my statement comes through I’ll let you know.

The dodgy numbers so far are:

  • 07099871684
  • 07099845250
  • 07099878879
  • 07099871869
  • 07099845567
  • 07099871165
  • 07099890461

  1. I can tell you mate that if you called them back it wouldn’t be at a premium rate. Here in the UK we have a system whereby the calling party must know (usually from the number) how much they will be charged for the call before they make it. So 07xxx will always be charged at a mobile rate. Things are a little bit more confusing than they were in the days of just having plain old BT as everyone is on a different network on both their mobiles and landlines so you may not know exactly how much you’ll get charged unless you’re really familiar with all of the rates from your service provider, but the rule is still correct. All premium rate lines are either overseas numbers (ie starting 00) or those that start 09.

Did you know that you can opt out of a lot of telemarketing calls by using the Telephone Preference Service at http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/ – even mobile numbers are eligible. I’ve got my home, mobile and work numbers registered. Once you’re on there, telemarketers are legally obliged to screen their databases for your numbers and remove them. Give it a shot!

  2. I just had a missed call from 07911865954 so i called it back only to reliaze it was a premium rate number and a 3.5 min phone call cost me £4, i tried to report this to BT they told me to call my mobile server (Orange) which i did they were no help at all.
