BMW have just placed a ‘1 Series with iPod connection’ ad at the bottom of my road which led to me finding iPod you BMW. I’ve been waiting for someone to release some slick iPod/car integration and I was hoping this would be a good start.

I’m left disappointed. It looks as though they’re still making things more complicated than they have to be.

Requirements are: either a new 1 Series (or pick out something else from their fleet) or take your common family automobile to your local BMW dealer and they’ll fit a dongle.

To connect the iPod, you plug it into a lead that comes from the glove box and then… leave it in there I suppose. You then create up to five specific playlists (labelled ‘BMW1’, ‘BMW2’ etc.) and control them from the car stereo as if it was a 5 CDs.

I’ve got a couple of issues with this is.

Firstly, the connection is poor. Your iPod’s gonna slide all over the place. Why can the make some snazzy holder in the dash board somewhere, or even better – a head unit which you can plug your iPod straight into, like the old 8-tracks.

Secondly, and worst of all, the 5 playlists mean that you have to select the music you want to hear via iTunes before you leave home. You cannot select any music from your library when in the vehicle. Which defeats the whole purpose of the iPod. Now that, is rubbish!

Come on, someone design something decent, please!

  1. I completely agree. What a load of crap! Sounds like somebody in the marketing department decided they should jump on the iPod bandwagon and somebody else came up with the crappy BMW playlists idea. iPod is brilliant because the design is fantastic and you don’t have to think too much…this BMW design is no better than the £35 it would take to buy an iTrip and cigarette adapter.

  2. Ive fitted a Dension Icelink plus in mine – o.k i cant control it via the steering wheel but the fact i can listen to everything at the touch of a button is better than BMW’s solution.
